The story of the design of this New York apartment in Chelsea begins as an empty-yish bachelor pad. The newly expanded apartment had a sparse, minimalist feel. Too minimalist for my client, who wanted a place that felt special, a place filled with objects that had personal meaning and purpose.
Starting with a fairly blank canvas, I worked with my client to design custom furniture and curate art to fill the space. In addition to their function, each piece was chosen with intent or has a unique story. The dining table and desk were custom made of exotic sonokeling wood, which has fantastic character and striations. A hand painted mural in the home office adds depth and a jewel tone palette to an otherwise mostly white space.
The objects in each room of this downtown New York apartment are all thoughtfully curated. The dining room, guest room and entry have paintings and sculptural furnishings chosen for the client. The once stark space is now richly punctuated with uniqueness and warmth.
The stumps were salvaged from Brooklyn's Domino Sugar Factory, and they’re now used as stool to take off his shoes when he gets home.
